A petition demanding justice for the victims of the Pentecost Sunday church massacre in Nigeria was delivered to 10 Downing Street on the one-year anniversary of the atrocity. Organised by Aid to the Church in Need (UK), the petition was received by Fiona Bruce MP, the Prime Minister's Special Envoy for Freedom of Religion or Belief.

The attack occurred on 5th June, 2022, at St Francis Xavier's Church in Owo, Nigeria. Terrorists opened fire and detonated explosives during Mass, resulting in 41 deaths and over 80 injuries. Despite the presence of witnesses, no one has been charged in connection with the atrocity.

Human rights advocates Baroness Caroline Cox and Lord David Alton joined ACN representatives to present the petition, emphasising the need to seek justice and raise awareness about the persecution faced by people of faith.

Survivors expressed their ongoing sense of insecurity and hope that the new Nigerian President, Bola Tinubu, would prioritise justice and security, fostering unity among different ethnic and religious groups.

Join us in shedding light on this pressing issue and working for justice for the victims of the massacre at St Francis Xavier’s Church, Nigeria. Find out more here.

NIGERIA: Call to beatify the Owo martyrs

Father Emmanuel Faweh, a Nigerian priest, has urged for the beatification of more than 40 Christians who were killed in the June 2022 attack at St Francis Xavier’s Church in south-west Nigeria. He considers them martyrs and believes their path to sainthood should get underway. Father Faweh expressed disappointment in the government's failure to prosecute the attackers and hopes that the new administration will address extremist violence effectively. Despite the tragedy, he emphasises the resilience of the Christian community and their unwavering faith in the face of adversity. Read more here.
