Nicaragua: 19 clerics released

Christians in Burkina Faso under threat from jihadists are not afraid to die for their faith, according to a local Church leader, speaking after the brutal killing of worshippers on Sunday (25th February).

Bishop Justin Kientega of Ouahigouya Diocese, north-east Burkina Faso, told ACN that the massacre of 12 people during a prayer service was just one of many incidents of terrorism that have led to the displacement of more than two million people.

Bishop Kientega underlined that, despite the difficulties and persecution, Christians have defied terrorists’ demands to embrace Islam.

“In this situation, some of the Christians accept to die."

On many occasions, the population was given an ultimatum to leave their villages and not return.

“There is no freedom to worship... In some villages they allow people to pray, but forbid [the teaching of the Christian faith] – in other places, they tell the Christians not to gather in the church to pray. This leads many to leave."

He added that “faith has grown” as the Church has been forced to adapt to the desperate situation.

“We get help from ACN, which bring us things that we need."

ACN has supported Burkina Faso by providing Father Sawadogo and other priests, religious and seminarians with Mass stipends, training fees and vehicles, as well as providing emergency aid - including food - to hundreds of people driven out of their homes by extremists.

HOLY LAND Appeal

As we enter our third week of Lent, we ask our benefactors to continue to support our Holy Land appeal to help Christians whose lives have been devastated by the ongoing conflict in the region.

The response to the appeal from our benefactors has been incredible and we thank everyone who has generously contributed towards helping our Christian brothers and sisters during this war. We are working hard to make sure emergency aid including food, medicine, rent for struggling families and other essential aid is provided to Christians in the Holy Land with the help of local Church partners.

The Pope Video - March 2024

For the martyrs of our day, witnesses to Christ – The Pope Video 3 – March 2024

“The courage of the martyrs, the witness of the martyrs, is a blessing for everyone,” is the Holy Father's message for "The Pope Video" this March.

In the video, produced in collaboration with ACN, the Pontiff dedicates this month’s prayer intention to persecuted Christians.

ACN (International) Executive President Regina Lynch praised the Pope’s video, saying the initiative is “very important in order to encourage prayer for the victims of persecution, as well as advocacy for those who suffer discrimination for their faith.

“In addition, we must involve politicians so that they defend the rights of the most vulnerable.”

The video comes just days after 12 Christians were slain when men armed with knives disrupted a church service last Sunday in northern Burkina Faso.
