PAKISTAN’S two leading bishops have demanded that security be tightened in schools across the country after two girls at a Catholic college were shot dead by a police officer working as a guard.

The incident took place at Sangota Public School in the Swat Valley, leaving five other children and a woman injured. In response to this horrifying act, Pakistan's leading bishops are demanding tighter security measures in schools nationwide.

Archbishop Joseph Arshad of Islamabad-Rawalpindi emphasised the need for punishment to prevent similar incidents in the future, while Archbishop Sebastian Shaw of Lahore condemned the threat posed by groups opposing girls' education. The attacker's motive appears to stem from his opposition to women's education, shedding light on the aggression faced by those who promote equal access to education.

Despite this tragedy, the Church remains steadfast in its commitment to providing education to all, particularly the most vulnerable. The incident has highlighted the urgent need for the government to ensure the safety of educational institutions and those dedicated to promoting education and health.

Catholic schools throughout Pakistan have been asked to observe a day of prayer in solidarity with the victims - please remember them in prayer this weekend. This heartbreaking event underscores the broader issue of kidnappings and forced conversions faced by Christian women and girls in Pakistan, as highlighted in ACN (UK)'s Hear Her Cries report.
