An abbot in the Holy Land has criticised the international community, accusing people of treating the crisis “as if it was a simple game” rather than responding to the urgent needs of families trapped in a “terrible situation”.

Abbot Nikodemus Schnabel of Jerusalem’s Benedictine Dormition Abbey told ACN that it is important to look at the conflict from a Christian perspective.

Abbot Schnabel said: “People are dying while the world watches as if it was a simple game, where one waves flags for one team or another. But this is a terrible situation.

“This is not a football match, and it’s not about scoring points, seeing who has the most impressive stories or the best pictures.”

ACN has provided emergency aid – food coupons, life-saving medicine and help with housing costs and tuition fees – for more than 3,400 Christians in the Holy Land who have lost their livelihoods because of the conflict’s economic impact.

A Sister at a ruined Church destroyed in the war (© Ismael Martínez Sánchez / ACN)

The ongoing war in Ukraine – which has recently entered its third year – is one of the desperately critical situations of our time. Our benefactors’ contribution makes it possible for our Church partners on the ground to provide urgently needed support to the faithful.

We continue to ask for your help to answer the cry of our brothers and sisters in Ukraine. Your support today can make a life-changing difference to those suffering the impact of this terrible conflict.

The effect of this war is incomprehensible to a lot of us more fortunate. Almost every person who remains in the country is grieving the loss of loved ones – mothers, fathers, brothers or sisters. Many thousands have died or been injured, and millions have been forced to leave what little is left of their homes behind. The first-hand Ukraine report from ACN can be viewed by clicking here, covering some of our key projects and the stories of those affected by the war.

You can help to bring God’s healing love where it’s urgently needed through a donation to our Ukraine appeal or a Gift of Faith.
