A catechist was abducted and killed by suspected terrorists last night (Thursday 18th April) in Fada N’gourma, east Burkina Faso.

Edouard Yougbare’s lifeless body was discovered in Saatenga parish Friday (19th April) morning, according to local reports received by ACN.

John Pontifex, ACN (UK) Head of Press & Public Affairs, said: “Edouard gave his life on the front line of persecution. He is a martyr who gave his life for God and in service of his community.

“At a time when Burkina Faso has become one of the world’s worst hotspots of persecution, where nobody can feel truly safe, we at Aid to the Church in Need stand in solidarity with all those suffering.”

ACN has provided emergency aid – including food – to hundreds of people driven out of their homes by terrorists.

Ukraine Appeal

As the war continues in Ukraine, we ask our benefactors to help support the work of the Church on the ground to make sure our Ukrainian brothers and sisters get the support that they need.

Major Archbishop Sviatoslav Shevchuk, the head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, told ACN about the ongoing crisis on the ground. “We are still alive,” he said. “This is how life is, you simply live one day at a time.” Many people live underground to avoid the shelling. Families and homes have been shattered. 14 million Ukrainians have been forced to leave their homes.

The Church is working tirelessly on over 600 projects in Ukraine that will help the suffering faithful by providing everything from food, water, heaters, to Mass stipends for priests on the front- line keeping people safe from harm. Please help us to support the people of Ukraine during this terrible time.

Knife Attack – Sydney, Australia

Following this week’s knife attack on East Syriac Bishop Mari Emmanuel at Christ the Good Shepherd Church, Sydney, Australia, which left three people wounded, Archbishop Anthony Fisher, the Catholic archbishop of Sydney made a powerful statement:

“Every person in this country, be they bishop or priest, rabbi or imam, minister or congregant, should be able to worship in safety, without fear that they might be subject to acts of violence while gathering in prayer. I urge the faithful to not respond to these events with fear, avoiding places of worship because they are worried about further attacks, nor with anger, engaging in acts of reprisal or revenge. The best response to violence and fear is prayer and peace.”

This weekend, please pray for priests and consecrated people everywhere - especially those who face hatred and violence for their faithfulness to Christ.
