UKRAINE: Monks staying in Kherson despite misery and devastation

Despite the war and catastrophic flooding in Kherson, Ukraine, Father Ignatius and Brother Pious of the Basilian Monastery of St Volodymyr the Great have chosen to remain and provide aid and pastoral care to the sick, the elderly, and others affected by the war.

They refuse to abandon their remaining parishioners and continue to offer sacraments such as baptism, marriage, and confession. The monastery is fully functional, providing food and necessities.

Father Ignatius's unwavering trust in God and belief that evil cannot prevail gives him inner peace, and he expresses gratitude to Aid to the Church in Need (ACN) for its assistance, including a new vehicle for pastoral work in these challenging circumstances.

Father Ignatius said that the monastery was not damaged by the war or the flood. He explained: “Everything works, we have food, we lack nothing, thank God. During the occupation I learnt to trust God more. Before, I also trusted him, but not as strongly as I do now. I thank God that I can sacrifice my life every day. I would also like to thank ACN.”

Pope Francis emphasises serving the marginalised and finding Jesus in them. Misión País, a mission project, mobilises around 450 university students to minister to marginalised communities, including prisons and challenging areas in Chile. Fr. Tomás Scherz from the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, whose students take part in the programme, highlighted the importance of outreach to distant and struggling parts of the country where the Church faces challenges.

We invite you to join us for our ACN in Scotland Benefactors Event in Carfin Grotto on Thursday 20th July, from 12pm - 2pm. Our guest speaker this year will be Patience Benita Ibile, originally from Kaduna State (northern Nigeria), working for The Kukah Centre as their National Assembly Desk Officer. For the past eight years, Patience has worked for ACN (USA), one of the focuses of her work has been to interview those who suffered persecution under Boko Haram in Nigeria and sought refuge in camps. She has also interviewed ex-Boko Haram members, Fulani herdsmen and victims of kidnapping. Patience will share with us their stories in a talk entitled The Healing Path; Victim to Victor. The afternoon will include a light lunch and conclude with a visit to the Reliquary and a short prayer service at the grotto. Please register here
